Johan Ter Horst scored an equaliser to complete his hat-trick deep into stoppage time to salvage a point for Folkestone Invicta in a thriller away to Staines Town on Thursday night.

The Folkestone side had gone ahead on three separate occasions at Wheatsheaf Park in what was a feast of attacking football as Staines’ top goalscorer Elliott Buchanan also scored a hat-trick.

Buchanan had also scored twice when sixth-placed Staines lost 5-3 away to leaders Billericay Town in another eight goal thriller on Monday night.

Dulwich’s 4-0 win over Dorking Wanderers at the adopted home at Tooting & Mitcham on Thursday night takes them above Invicta in second place in the Bostik League Premier Division table but Neil Cugley’s side is still looking very well placed to secure a play off place.

Here are the goals flowed:-

·        A tenth minute Sam Hasler corner from the right is flicked in by TER HORST with a well-taken finish at the far post.  0-1

·        BUCHANAN equalises in the 13th minute when he slots the ball into the net after Mo Bettamer slips the ball through when he receives it from Sam Hatton.  1-1

·        TER HORST restores Invicta’s lead with a good low finish into the net after a 22nd minute Kieron McCann ball in.  1-2

·        It is Ter Horst 2 BUCHANAN 2 as the Staines striker pokes the ball in from the left hand side of the penalty area after a 36th minute ball in from Josh Webb. 2-2 HT

·        Ronnie DOLAN puts Invicta ahead again with the goal of the game in the 52nd minute as he hits an absolute screamer into the top corner of the net from just outside the penalty area after good play from Ter horst in a move started by McCann.  2-3

·        Staines equalise for a third time in the 71st minute as BETTAMER fires in at the near post despite goalkeeper Tim Roberts getting a hand to it after a Hatton pass.  3-3

·        Staines go ahead for the first time on the night as BUCHANAN completes his hat-trick in the 82nd minute as Max Worsfold gets clear down the left hand side after playing a low ball across goal.  4-3

·        TER HORST saves the day during the fourth minute of stoppage time as he strikes again from close range to convert an Ade Yusuff ball in from the right hand side in a move started by Ian Draycott.

This fixture had originally been rained off on Easter Saturday. Invicta restored Ter Horst to the starting X1 in place of Joe Taylor and had Jordan Wright back on the substitutes’ bench after his loan spell at Faversham Town has come to an end.

The visitors made a positive start as a second minute Dolan shot from outside the penalty area took a deflection off a team mate and went out for a goal kick.

Dolan then found Nat Blanks down the left hand side three minutes later and the latter’s inviting cross just eluded Yusuff and was put out for a corner at the far post by Webb ahead of Draycott.

Invicta’s opener and Staines’ first equaliser soon followed as both sides had scored within the opening 13 minutes.  Goals were always likely here in a fixture between the Premier Division’s two leading scorers.

Yusuff then fired a low shot narrowly wide of the post when he combined with Ter Horst after initially getting in behind Joash Nembhard to meet a Hasler ball.

Blanks then played the ball up the left hand side to McCann three minutes later whose dangerous ball across goal was put out for a corner.  Hasler’s deep set piece from the right hand side this time was put out at the far post for another corner.

Invicta won the corner count 11-2 as despite their late, late equaliser they came away thinking that this is a game that they could have won.

Ter Horst’s second goal was followed by a good Hasler strike from outside the penalty area that goalkeeper Conor Hudnott go down to save.

At the other end, a 25th minute Buchanan shot on the turn was blocked by Invicta defender Josh Vincent.

Invicta had further openings as McCann made space after receiving the ball from Dolan and hit a low shot wide a minute later and Nembhard feet tangled with Jerald Aboagye’s but a goal kick rather than a penalty was awarded.

Draycott then chipped wide of the target when goalkeeper Hudnott came out to clear from Yusuff to leave the goal unguarded after a ball over the home defence.

Invicta captain Callum Davies slid to block a 32nd minute Buchanan shot but the Staines striker was soon to make it 2-2.

The visitors should have gone in ahead at half time as Draycott shot wide of the target during first half stoppage time after he had met an Aboagye ball in after a Yusuff pass out to the right hand side.

Staines made a double substitution at half time but Invicta made a strong start to the second half though. Ter Host touched the ball on to Dolan whose low shot from the edge of the penalty area was heading for the bottom corner but goalkeeper Hudnott did well to get down and touch it past the post for a corner.  Dolan’s set piece from the left was met by Ter Horst but Hudnott kept it out again.

Yusuff then shot into the side netting in the 49th minute when he did well to keep the ball in play on the left hand side after a deep Aboagye ball from the right.

The ball broke for Staines substitute Jonathan Hippolyte down the right hand side in the 51st minute but Vincent made a good saving tackle.

Dolan then made it 3- with a strike that looked like being a goal as soon as it left his boot.

Hippolyte slipped the ball through to Worsfold a minute later but goalkeeper Roberts came out to claim the ball.

A stray 59th minute Hasler pass back to Davies let Buchanan in but this time the striker dragged his shot wide of the target.

It was end to end as Yusuff then shot wide of the far post across goal when found by Draycott after home defender Nembhard had failed to clear.

A 62nd minute Hasler corner from the right was met by Davies at the far post and a McCann shot was blocked.

Draycott shot wide across goal after a Ter Horst ball nine minutes later but Staines were to make it 3-3 seconds later.

Invicta responded as Blanks and Ter Horst combined to find Hasler who sent in a dangerous ball from the left hand side but no one was there to capitalise.

The ball was then not cleared in the 75th minute and Nembhard blocked a Yusuff shot.

Aboagye then couldn’t quite put a McCann ball in from the left in at the far post two minutes later after Aboagye had initially combined with both Dolan and Draycott.

An 80th minute Hasler shot from outside the penalty area flew wide of the post after a good spell of Invicta possession.

Newbhard played a god 81st minute ball out of defence from deep on the left to Hippolyte on the right but Blanks blocked the subsequent shot.

Staines’ need for all three points was greater than Invicta’s and the home side’s hopes were raised when they went ahead inside the final ten minutes.

The Swans threatened again in the 84th minute when Bettamer cut inside Davies but the covering Blanks was there to block the shot.

Ter Horst cut in from the right hand side at the other end two minutes later and his shot across goal was deflected past the far post for a corner.

Invicta had the ball in the net during stoppage time after a foul by Hippolyte on Blanks when Hasler sent a free kick into the penalty area but Yuusff was flagged offside before he challenged goalkeeper Hudnott and Vincent put the ball in.

Ter Horst then completed the scoring for a dramatic finish. Since going off injured before half time in Invicta’s recent Kent Reliance Senior cup semi final win over Charlton Athletic Under 23s, Ter Horst has been fairly quiet by his own now very high standards. Tonight he showed again just what a class act he is.

Invicta’s previous hat-trick had been scored by Joe Taylor in a Kent Senior Cup tie at home to Ramsgate inDecember 2016.

Ter Horst’s only other senior Invicta hat trick had been in an 8-0 home win over Crawley Down Gatwick in December 2013.

There could have been an even more dramatic late twist as Yusuff shot into the side netting from the right hand side after another Invicta break involving Davies and substitute Taylor.

Staines’ Wadah Ahmidi had been the game’s only booking for encroachment at an eighth minute free kick.

Referee Tim Donnellan and his assistants also had good game. All in all an excellent advert for Bostik League football.

If these two sides meet in the play off semi finals in three weeks’ time then few will be complaining.

Invicta had previously drawn 4-4 away to Halesowen in the Dr Martens League Premier Division during the 2000-01 season.

But when was the last time they had been involved in a match in which both sides had a player score a hat trick?
