An 88th minute equaliser direct from a free kick denied Folkestone Invicta victory against Haringey Borough at the BuildKent Stadium on a windy Saturday afternoon as Neil Cugley’s side relinquished top spot in the BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division.

Romoluwa Akinola lifted the sweetly struck set piece from the left hand edge of the penalty area into the net for the first goal that Invicta had conceded since before Christmas.

Josh Vincent had broken the deadlock to put the Folkestone side ahead in the 80th minute against ten men Haringey Borough who had one-time Invicta player Salvyn Kisitu shown a straight red card for a reckless 67th minute challenge on Scott Heard.

A second successive Saturday draw in January 2020 for Invicta means that Worthing’s 6-1 home win over struggling Merstham took them above the Folkestone club at the top of the table.

With Alfie Paxman suspended after being sent off in the previous weekend’s 0-0 draw at Brightlingsea Regent, Nat Blanks came in at left back for the home side.

Invicta had a good early chance but Johan Ter Horst shot wide of the target in the ninth minute when Heard put him through after receiving hte ball from Ira Jackson.

At the other end, a 12th minute Roman Michael Percil throw in from the right found Callum Ismail whose ball defletced into the Invicta penalty area but didn’t quite fall for Akinola.

A Jackson free kick was then on target three minutes later but goalkeeper Jonathan Miles got behind it to make a comfortable save after a foul by Imsail on Jerson Dos Santos.

Heard played the ball forward up the right hand side to Dos Santos in the 30th minute when the strtiker shot wide of the far post across goal.

The ball broke for Michael Percil down the left hand side of the Invicta penalty area in the 33rd minute when the Haringey player got a shot in but home goalkeeper Tim Roberts saved and Georgios Aresti put the rebound wide when it looked as though he was about to open the scoring.

Former Invicta and Hythe defender Kisitu put the ball over his own crossbar for the game’s first corner in the 41st minute.

Jackson then shot against a defender when striking partner Dos Santos plyaed the ball back to him inside the penalty area in the 45th minute after a Heard ball to Blanks.

Haringey Borough went forward within the opening minute of the second half as captain Scott Durojaiye found Anthos Solomou down the right hand side of the penalty area but Invicta player-coach Micheal Everitt threw himself across to block for the visitors’ first corner of the game.

A 48th minute Invicta corner from the right hand side then came towards Callum Davies at the far post but didn’t quite fall for the home captain.  A well-struck Ter Horst shot then warmed goalkeeper Miles’ hands seconds later.

Dos Santos – now 10 games without a much-needed goal, a barren run that began with his missed dinked penalty at Maldon & Tiptree – then put a 49th minute Vincent cross from the right into the middle just over.

Konstantinos Alexandrou headed wide from a 52nd minute Akinola corner on the left hand side.

Ronnie Dolan found Vincent on the right hnad side in the 57th minute when the latter’s ball into the box evaded Everitt’s attempted diving header.

The deadlock remained as Ter Horst received the ball from Heard on the right five minutes later and drilled a ball across goal that a stretching Dos Santos couldn’t quite put in at the far post.

Referee Elliott Kaye issued his first card of the game when Haringey right back Ismail was booked for taking too long over a 66th minute throw in.

Fellow full back Kisitu was sent off a minute later as Haringey Borough were reduced to ten men for a second successive Saturday. Captain Durojaiye filled in at left back.

A good 71st minute Heard ball down the right hand side gave Dos Santos the chance to take the ball round goalkeeper Miles but the striker was forced wide and couldn’t get his shot in.

Invicta brought former Haringey Borough striker Chinedu McKenzie on for Dos Santos and then made an attacking change as Kieron McCann came on or Everitt.

The home side’s breakthrough came in the 80th minute when following a throw in on the left hand side Jackson touched the ball back to Ter Horst whose forwrad pass deflected into the path of the advancing VINCENT who slotted the ball firmly into the net.

Haringey defender Stelios Demetriou was booked for dissent following the goal.

Akinola cut in from the left hand side and got a low 82nd minute shot in but Roberts got down to save.

Unused Invicta substitute Sam Hasler then managed to get himself a yellow card for throwing the ball away to delay a Haringey re-start close to the changing rooms.

Vincent was then also booked for a trip on Akinola on the left hand side after an Aresti pass.

Akinola’s subsequent set piece was to produce the equaliser.

Invicta responded in search of a late winner as an 89th minute Blanks shot from the left hand side of the penalty area was blocked by Alexandrou.

But the visitors threatened a late winner when Akinola received the ball from substitute Anthony McDonald on the left hand side and the goalscorer’s good 90th minute strike across goal was touched past the far post for a corner by Roberts.

Invicta then gained a succession of stoppage time corners as a Vincent shot was blocked and the ball was put out again when Finn O’Mara met another ball into the box.

One that got away for Invicta.
